In his itinerant preaching, Jesus is accompanied by the twelve apostles and a few women in the Gospels also tell us their names. These two groups of women. The first group includes: Mary, mother of James the Less and Joseph, Mary, wife of Cleophas, Mary Salome, wife of Zebedee and mother of James the Greater and John the Evangelist. The second group, however, women touched by the grace of Jesus or those he miraculously: Mary Magdalene, Joanna and Susanna (wife of Cusa, who was administrator of Herod Antipas). These women have the courage to live an austere life as it should result in the following of Jesus in his tireless itinerancy.
About Mary Cleophas, which will be discussed in a later discussion, it should be a definite linguistic Cleophas that would be the brother of St. Joseph (and therefore the uncle of Jesus). is the Italian translation of the greek name Kleopàs also translated with "Cleophas", which corresponds to the Hebrew Alpheus (Halphai). Mary of Cleophas means so Mary wife of Cleophas or Alphaeus. Therefore it is not correct, in common parlance, be attributed to this pious woman a middle name: Mary Cleophas. The fault, so to speak, must be given to the Latin version of Vamgelo, where we read Mary Cleophae (Cleophae is the genitive of Cleopha. Meaning the wife of Cleophas). Given the occasion, here I am pleased to comment on the figure of Santa Maria Salome whose statue, fashioned by Giulio Cozzoli in 1951 (that year the icon of the Madonna of the Martyrs was crowned with golden crowns designed by the same company Cozzoli, chiseled from Coppola Gagliardi of Naples) was purchased in 1953 by the Administration of the Death chaired by Mr James Spider, with the contribution of the former prior Onofrio Vito Binetti, and carried in procession at Easter of that year, by the Confraternity of SS. of Loreto. The brothers of that association are wearing shirts, cap, caterpillars with black ribbon and white mozzetta on mozzetta metal plate depicting the Madonna di Loreto.
. On the base of the statue is following inscription:

. A fanciful legend would identify Salome with the mother-in-law of St. Peter, healed by Jesus, not named in the Gospel of Mark step (1, 29-31): "Then, coming out of the synagogue, they went into the house of Simon and Andrew , with James and John. The mother-in-law of Simon was in bed with a fever and immediately told him about her. He came and picked her up taking her hand and the fever left her and she waited on them. "
According to the Apocrypha (from the greek = apokryphos removed from view, that is, works which do not belong to the canon of Scripture) was a Jewish midwife, who came to assist Mary in labor, did not believe in His virgin birth, for which he wanted to see for themselves the condition hymen. "If I place my finger - is written in the Proto-gospel of James (XIX, 1-3) - and you look upon his nature not believe that a virgin has given birth." But do not just put his fingers, his hand came loose and fell to the ground in terrible pain. Only by repenting and touching the Holy Child, The disbelief was again his hand healed.
According to the canonical Gospels, Mary Salome was one of the pious women who witnessed the crucifixion, death and resurrection of Christ. Is mentioned twice in the Gospel of Mark with the name "Salome" (Mark 15, 40-41 and 16, 1), but thanks to a parallel comparison with the Gospel of Matthew (27, 55-56) it can identify as "the mother of the sons of Zebedee." Traditionally it is called, hereinafter, "Maria Salome" (with accent).
Maria Salome was then the wife of Zebedee and mother of two sons, James the Greater (revered for centuries in Spain in the Basilica of Santiago de Compostela) and John the Evangelist (The youngest and longest of the Apostles, author of the Fourth Gospel and the Apocalypse, the only prophetic book of the New Testament).
Cozzoli For this reason, the iconography, he set up as an old woman of Galilee, looking mournful, the face of the contract in a weeping softly, holding his hands a jar of scented oils to serve ' embalming of the body of our Lord. In fact, according to Jewish custom, the time of Jesus, the dead man was blindfolded with strips after being sprinkled with herbs and wrapped in a sheet to mitigate the smell of rotting for the benefit of people who went to perform the rites of mourning. The Gospels tell the story with some variations. According to Mark: "The past week Mary of Magdala, Mary of James and Salome bought spices to go to anoint Jesus (Mark 16, 1) and the same in Luke (24, 1):" the women prepared spices and ointments ... the first day of the week, early in the morning, came to the tomb bringing the spices they had prepared ... "According to John, however, the pious task was undertaken by two men, Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus, that:" brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, weighing about 100 pounds. They took the body of Jesus and bound it in linen cloths with the spices, as the burial custom of the Jews "(Giov.19, 39-40).
Zebedee's family lived in Batsàida on the shores of Lake Tiberias, or Galilee, also called the Sea of \u200b\u200bGalilee. They had a small fishing industry, their members were also Simone (which will be called Peter) and Andrew his brother, both Apostles. Given the abundance of fish in the lake, it is assumed that their business was profitable, in addition, they also had time off from their jobs for long periods of time. In fact we know that John the Evangelist went to the Jordan River to hear the preaching of John the Baptist and to live with him as his disciple. It would appear that they were a family of small fishermen, but owners of small fishing company. A Starting the day on which, under the direction of Jesus, realized the miraculous catch of fish at the Master's words "I will make you fishers of men", they finally gave up fishing and followed Jesus in his apostolic travels, along with their mother Salome
Like all mothers, Salome was an ambitious woman of honor for their children to the point of asking the teacher promised to reserve for them the first places in the messianic kingdom. But Jesus did not promise any place, but predicted that would later be necessary to suffer and fight for his kingdom and the two brothers apostles said that they would be willing to do anything. Here are the exact words of Matthew (20.20 to 23):
"Then approached the mother of the sons of Zebedee with her sons, and bowed to ask something. He said, 'What do you want? ". He replied, "Say that these my sons sit one at your right and one on your left in your kingdom." Jesus answered, "You do not know what you are asking. Can you drink the cup that I am going to drink? ". They said 'We can. " And he added: "My Very well; however, is not mine to give you to sit at my right or my left, but for those for whom it is prepared by my Father." The mission of Christ on earth was thus to distribute rewards to men, but to suffer for their salvation. This "drink cup "is a biblical metaphor for passion is imminent.
Tradition says that Mary Salome escaped by sea with the Saints Biagio and Demetrius after the beheading of his son James, which occurred in 44 AD by Herod Agrippa I. To avoid possible misunderstanding
mind, it should say something about the Herodian Dynasty: Herod the Great is mentioned in the Gospels to the "massacre of the innocents" and that the collective has taken the shape of the most appalling evil. Herod Antipas was the son of Herod the Great. He was referring two episodes Gospel: the death of John the Baptist (whose head was of the same name wanted by the Jewish princess, Salome, daughter of Herodias, as compensation for his erotic and passionate performance as a dancer) and his refusal to judge Jesus sent him to Pilate, hence the popular saying: "There by Ròet'à Peel (ranges from pillar to post), meaning to download other a difficult decision. Herod Agrippa I was the son of Aristobulus and Berenice, and grandson of Herod the Great. He was responsible for the beheading of James the Greater and the imprisonment of Peter. Herod Agrippa II was the last representative of the Herodian dynasty and court of Paul of Tarsus (Acts 25.26).
But back to the narrative tradition. Maria Salome came in Lazio. The saint was tired of the journey, begged for shelter in the house of a Gentile (Then called the monetary Mauro), a short distance from the town of Veroli (Frosinone), while his fellow travelers (Biagio and Demetrius) entered the city and were martyred. Salome was the home of Maureen dedicated to the conversion of pagans to the Christian faith, and after six months he died. Mauro reverently collected the remains for burial, encased in an urn of the rock upon which the words appear: "haec sunt reliquiae B. Mariae Matris et Joannis Jacobi Apostolorum" (Here are the relics of the Blessed Mary, Mother of the Apostles James and John) and hid in a cave. Some time later they found some pagans and seeing the stone urn which contained old bones, they cast the same in the village square. A greek man, who was unable to read the inscription on the case, understanding the importance, he decided to save the precious treasure, and at night went to the streets to retrieve the bones wrapped in a cloth and sealed in a new urn, hiding outside the city at a cliff. Later, a farmer named Thomas Verola, having received specific instructions in a dream by Maria Salome about the place where his remains were hidden, began to research them and the discovery took place on May 25, 1209. It is said that while the bishop of the place rose into the air to show the crowd the bone, the tibia was seen alive and gushing blood all a miracle. The urn containing the relics beneath the altar of the basilica dedicated to Santa who was then proclaimed the patron saint of Veroli and is celebrated on May 25 of each year.

What are the important discoveries about the relics?
. From
audits in recent years by a committee of specialists, it appears that the wear femur which implies the advanced age of the woman. It has been assumed that the height of 162-163 cm. The bone has a horizontal to cause injury, almost certainly caused by an object bitagliente wide, 17 cm. Could be considered a blow to the abdomen. More on the spines were found to cause injury, caused by a sharp object, edged. Careful examination of the skull, which is almost intact, (but lacks the jaw) are detected against the light of that injury probably by half a blunt instrument which caused slight deformation of the same. The inside has instead a stain that could be blood, and hemorrhage caused by stroke.
The ancient source says nothing about the cause of his death, but the findings have been published tend to suggest that it has just died after being beaten in the blood and probably after agonizing for months.
Before concluding, allow me to reflect. In the Church, the worship of relics is very old and was born around the sacrifice of the martyrs. And 'a practice that has always lived with balance and clarity, without excess or indifference. What is honored to venerate the relics? Obviously not the materiality of what we see, but the holy person to whom it applies the honor. So the holy person celebrate the work God has accomplished in her. Revere and honor the saints through their mortal remains and honor means to commune with their individual already fully built and in perfect communion with Christ. Love leads the saints to love Christ also actively taking these brothers and sisters who have gone before us as an example of life.
