L 'Sorrows

L 'Sorrows (or Our Lady of Sorrows or Our Lady of Sorrows Seven Sorrows of Mary) in Latin Mater Dolorosa, is a title that is often invoked by Christians call Mary, the mother of Jesus

L 'only evangelist to record the presence of the Virgin on Golgotha \u200b\u200bis John. " The other evangelists (Matthew, Mark, Luke) does not endorse this presence, even when mentioning the name of the holy women who were to follow Jesus and witnessed his death on Calvary. Episode true then, as witnessed by the Gospel, that of 'Sorrows. Not so that of the Pietà. None of the four Evangelists describe the scene of the body of Jesus down from the cross and laid on the lap of Mother. This episode belongs to the tradition, not to the reference text of the New Testament.
To Our Lady of Sorrows is not celebrating the novena, as for the other Madonna venerated throughout the year, but the "seven day", so named because it covers the seven sorrows of the Mother of God Let's see: 1,

Pain: Simeon predicted Mary's passion and death of his Son;

The commemoration of the 'Lady of Sorrows is celebrated on the Friday before Palm Sunday under the title "The Seven Sorrows of Mary." In fact, leaving the protagonist of the figure of Jesus on Good Friday, in the liturgical calendar, the celebration of the suffering has been advanced by one week. In addition to the Friday of passion, 'Sorrows was honored with another party outside the loop of Lent, the third Sunday of September. It was instituted by Pius VII in 1814 in reaction to Napoleon's campaigns against the Church. Pius X in 1914 finally settled the liturgical feast of 'Our Lady of Sorrows Sept. 15.

This is the statue that is currently in a niche in the cemetery chapel of 'Confraternity. Like the others that followed, this image of Our is portrayed in mourning dress and cloak, by the cross decorated shroud, which she embraces with his right hand while his left hand holding a handkerchief to wipe away the tears. His face, streaked with tears, turned to the sky in supplication, but the breast is pierced by the sword, the symbol of baleful prophecy of Simeon. This statue, for most of the nineteenth century, was the star of the Friday of passion.
In 1905-1906 it was replaced with another image, also carved in wood, and went in procession until 1957.

L 'was shaped by the current statue of Cozzoli in 1957 and was carried in procession on Friday of passion in 1958 but he could not see it because the sculptor died February 15, 1957. The statue was donated by Mr Archconfraternity. Magarelli ra-Antoinette, who resides in Hoboken, as we read in a letter sent to the prior pro tempore, prof. This work was completed over a period historian for the Confraternity of Death: The fifty years from 1907 to 1956. In this period the sculptor, with appreciable skill, shaped paper mache statues gradually replacing previous ones were made of wood. 'S only remaining original of the statues is the precious image of Our Lady of Mercy, although slightly retouched in the face.
