To be, or not to be: that is the question. To be or not to be: that is the problem. How many times have we heard these words, often in completely foreign to the spirit with which they were written. This drama was over centuries and the swirling dust of history. I'm talking about "Hamlet", one of the tragedies of the poet and playwright, William Shakespeare ( "The Tragical History of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark" ), written in 1600 and performed on stages all over the world.
.
I should briefly report the plot, so the reader can understand the timing of the play in which the Master Calò made his "debut".
In the castle of Elsinore, Denmark, the old king, Hamlet's father, died only two months but Queen Gertrude, mother of the young prince, he married his cousin Claudius, who succeeded the throne. A ghost in the likeness of his father appears to Hamlet and tells him that he was murdered by Claudius, who paid him the poison in his ear while he slept. The ghost asks Hamlet to punish the murderess. Hamlet, shocked by the sudden revelation promises to explore and look for evidence of the crime, pretending to be mad. Came to the castle a company of actors and the prince agrees that is staging "the murder of Gonzaga", a work by texture similar to that told to him by the ghost. The play begins and the King Claudius gets up and goes out revealing his guilt. Hamlet reaches the rooms of the mother and during their discussion, believing it is Claudius, accidentally kills people, council of the king and father of Ophelia, the young woman with whom he is in love, which was hidden behind a curtain to listen. The young Ophelia goes mad and commits suicide by drowning. Laertes, her brother, wants to avenge his losses. The king calls upon Hamlet and Laertes in a duel, Laertes is put in the hands of the king a sword with the poisoned tip. Laertes wounds Hamlet, first to die, kill him and the king, while the Queen drinks a poisoned cup in error, to the son. The epilogue of the tragedy of course, sees the death of all.

In 1887 Hamlet was repeatedly represented at the Teatro Comunale di Molfetta or "Old Theater". Built in 1810 for involvement of the mayor Felix Fiore, has 400 seats divided into three tiers of boxes plus gallery, adorned with elegant decorations. It was demolished in 1902, considering it "operates luxury estate devolved to the caste ..." In the theater was committed
a beautiful French actress, Elena Jaubert, who had dazzled by his charm Master Calo (1845-1923). He was appointed Director of the Civic Band, under resolution of 7 June 1886 and hoped, in that splendid and unforgettable theatrical season, to find in her a "correspondence of amorous senses" would say Foscolo ("From the graves, 30), profess master composer and giving her a bouquet of roses. The Jaubert
wanted to test his musical talent and one evening he said: "State Property soir je dois representer nouvellement the Hamlet; you vous êtes vraiment compositeur maître, je vous me faire une surprise de Prie ... Je l'attends, vous avez compris? Seulement ainsi vous aurez tout mon coeur! " (Tomorrow night I have to again represent the Hamlet, and if you are truly the master composer, please let me ... a surprise awaits you, you understand? Only then you will have all of my heart!) . What lay ahead as possible. As in the novels of the nineteenth century, the two were predestined to love and a great love, deep in the heat, long-lasting.
Don Xavier's sensitive soul and self-taught, he was really in love with the beauty of this woman for whom he wanted to take my word. As Hamlet gave him the opportunity to compose a funeral march, just as the scene (Act V, scene 1) was accounted for funeral Ophelia, had run from the orchestra, which he trained appropriately, a piece of music appropriate to the scene, prerequisite to enter into the good graces of Elena, entitling the name of the Shakespearean tragedy. At the end of the play, Don Xavier warmest congratulations he received from the public and, in particular, by Elena Jaubert which did not hesitate to say, Maître, directs you to the musique avec beaucoup d'habil, à partir de ce moment You seras l'homme de ma vie " (Maestro, you have directed the music with great skill, from the moment you will be the man of my life).

Don Xavier, flattered by the words of the actress, said: "Merci beaucoup, mademoiselle, vous êtes la femme de mon coeur" (Thank you, mademoiselle, you are the woman of my heart). It was a true declaration of love "à la française" , without rhetoric, which gave rise to their subsequent marriage.
But a "tragedy" was lying in wait for them both. The birth of his son Sergio, his wife Elena died of puerperal fever, just 7 September 1890, at age 21, leaving the teacher in a state of deep pain and shock. Puerperal fever, puerperal sepsis or more accurately, was, for a very long time, one of the most frequent complications that affected pregnant women, causing a high mortality post partum. This disease, now completely eradicated, is supported by an infection caused by anaerobic bacteria, group B streptococci, staphylococci and to a lesser extent.
It was off a star in the firmament of which the Master had written Calò not just musical notes on the staff but also words of love, the love that had brought in his heart after the death of his young wife composing two-speed ' Dolor "and" Fatality " both written in 1897, listening to what you feel the excruciating pain of the Master seems to be saying: "Je t'aime , I love you Helen, until my weary heart will rest forever, and tears dry up the sources of the my face. " His son Sergio, in 1902, he wrote a funeral march in memory of his mother Helen.
of Hamlet The scores were then donated by Calò Archconfraternity St. Stephen's and is one of the marches, according to tradition, listening to the concert at the foot still on Holy Thursday at the monument to Mazzini (once at the St. Anne's Church).
In the opinion of Prof. Mauro Spagnolo, walking, although well developed, still does not show his artistic maturity, reached later in the composition of the two gears most symbolic of its production ("Pain" and "Fatal"). "Hamlet," however, presents a homogeneous structure. Impressive introduction in F minor follows a trio in D major central features original music and a poignant sweetness.
